How To Make Beer Candles

To make a beer candle is very effective, but quite simple.

Melt gel in a saucepan over low heat – this medium is NOT microwavable.

While this is in progress attach a wick tab securely to the bottom of your wick by clamping with pliers.

Attach to the bottom of your beer glass by immersing the wicked tab in some melted gel and then pushing firmly to the bottom of the glass with a long bamboo skewer.

Grate a small quantity of the orange colour tab into the melted gel and mix well. Add enough brown colour tab to make a true beer colour. Juggle the colours until you are happy with the balance. Err on the side of less, as you can always add more colour later but diluting too much takes a good deal of gel.

When you are happy with the colour allow it to cool and thicken slightly. Add fragrance up to 5% of the weight of the gel. Pour into your beer glass allowing plenty of bubbles to be added as you do so. Ensure that your wick will remain straight and upright with skewers across the mouth of the glass. Use clothes pegs on the wick if required. Allow to set up completely.

Clean any remaining gel by peeling out of the saucepan when it is completely cooled.

Melt some of the paraffin wax in the saucepan. Allow to cool some. Add fragrance. When a skin starts to form on the surface of the wax, whip with a fork to incorporate the cooling wax into the molten remains. As the “curds” start to form begin to build the head of your beer on the set gel base by scooping the setting wax out with the fork and position on the gel. Whip again with the fork and scoop out more to continue to build.

When finished allow to set completely. Trim wick to around 5mm in length with nail clippers.

Place a safety sticker on the base of your candle and stand back and admire your creation.
